A donation drive at Holy Cross Elementary School in Burnaby turned out to be a success as 67 bicycles – including 27 bikes for kids – were given away May 4.
According to organizer Graham Darling, those sets of wheels will be given away to people in the community with low incomes looking for an inexpensive way to travel.
“This is currently the only event of its kind in the Greater Vancouver area,” said Darling.
The Knights of Columbus offered the event in partnership with various organizations including the PEDAL Society. People were also welcome to bring in their current bikes for a free tune-up.
When a huge, superhero-themed festival hit the streets of Burnaby in June, members of Holy Cross Parish saw an opportunity to evangelize.
They joined the parade with a float featuring a cross crowned with thorns, wearing a red cape and labelled “HERO.” They also carried banners of the Knights of Columbus and symbols of the various activities and charitable works the parish offers.
Parade organizers estimated a total of 50,000 people participated in the festival.
